9 Tips for New Drivers

A Few Tips for New Drivers

We were all there once – our head empty of tips for new drivers, we were new to the road and much more reactive to the somewhat crazy idea that these massive machines move (mostly) symbiotically along the roads. There are a fair few things we all wish we would have known a little sooner – and a fair few things that seasoned drivers seem to often forget. Get out there and enjoy the road but read through this list first to make sure you are prepared.

Keep Your Temper

This one is at the top of the list because it’s such an incredibly important when it comes to tips for new drivers. It seems that, when we get onto the road, inhibitions are tossed out the window like so many cups and wrappers on I-5. Like any situation in life, it’s better to keep your temper no matter if someone has cut you off, annoyed you or if traffic just won’t stop. Getting angry at the guy in front of you doesn’t change the situation. It’s best to keep it cool.

Do Not Tailgate

We have all had an experience where it seems the guy behind us just won’t back up a little bit. It seems a mystery as to why anyone would want to be so aggressive on the roadway, but the best thing to do is to just get over and out of the way so that you can continue on as safely as possible. It goes without saying that you should give cars ahead of you a good amount of space so everyone can be safe, feel safe and stop within time to avoid an accident.

No Littering

This is one of our best tips for new drivers. No one likes a litter bug. Help keep our roadways looking great by disposing of your trash and recycling in the bins at home or work.

The Big Deal About the Left Lane

The left lane has been a big topic of debate among anyone who has shared the roadway with others and you might get different advice about what it’s there for. Some people see the left lane as a cruising lane, meant to speed past anyone and everyone. Some people see the left lane as a passing lane and that the right lane is meant to be driven on. There are typically traffic laws in place wherever you may live and it’s good to brush up on what the left lane is for in your area.

Know Where the Most Important Features Are

It is extremely important to know all about the most important features of you vehicle. Where is the ebrake? Where are the defroster heater and AC buttons? Which lever turn the wipers on and which is the headlights? It’s better to become familiar with these features before you get on the road so that you are not distracted with trying to figure it out while driving.

Know When to Stop the Vehicle

There are two types of people – those who address vehicle issues early on and those who wait until their engine is knocking on the side of the road. If you think your vehicle may have a major mechanical issue going on, the best idea is to contact us and get it to our shop ASAP to evaluate the need to repair issues and hopefully save you from making anything worse.

School Bus Stopping

When to stop for a school bus can be somewhat confusing at times. This great infographic helps us all to understand when to stop and when to go. When it doubt, be mindful of traffic around you and stop if it seems fit. Those kids are worth it!

Emergency Vehicles

Another situation that can cause uncertainty is when to stop or move over for emergency vehicles. If you see a police vehicle, ambulance or fire truck, the best thing to do is to get over onto the side as quickly and safely as possible.

Traffic Laws

Traffic laws are part of the training for obtaining a license to drive, but not every little detail is covered in the courses and some information inconveniently slips our minds from time to time. Be sure to be aware of common traffic laws – like when you can take a right turn at a red light, how soon to turn on a turn signal and speed limit laws.
